Concerned Customer
Replacement of a working furnace and air conditioner due to the age of my equipment by recommendation from family and friends. Selected Bryant equipment due to its reputation and name; however, the experience with the installation is concerning to me. 1) Humming noise from the furnace whether the furnace is on or off and only goes away if the power switch is turned off, 2) the manual specs called for the furnace filter to be 16 x 25; however, the installer indicated that with the cost of that then you might as well go for the bigger size 20 x 25 x5. Unfortunately, the bigger box is only utilizing 70% of the surface and the gas pipe appears to be tight on top of the filter box which is not allowing for a true, straight 3" sediment trap. 3) a plastic base came with the air conditioner and when asked if it was to be used for my air conditioner (which is larger than the old one) I was told no and we only brought it in case your current base was not big enough. It is not! The installers asked if I had dirt and the answer was yes; however, they just moved the existing dirt around (did not put any additional) before placing the air conditioner and allowing for the air conditioner to sink forward which it now has like the old one and the base needed to be replaced with the larger base to spread the weight out and allow for mowing/trimming. A text message was sent asking for the plastic base after installation and no reply. During installation the man doing the sheet metal work said to me, "why did you go with an 80% furnace and not a high efficiency unit because this is causing me a lot of work" \- I was dumbfounded! At the initial start up, the blower/vents was extremely loud and it blew dirt and other stuff from years into the rooms and onto the bed coverings and took a lot of time to clean it up. The installer was adjusting the thermostat and told me, "that I will need to keep the bathroom vent closed" but never explained why – I never had to do this before. After the installers left and I started looking at their work, I was shocked to find old copper coiled up tubing and the solenoid (from a humidifier) still hanging and tucked up above venting and still attached to the water heater, the gas flue exhaust, which gets very hot, was pressed up against the gas pipe and when you traced the gas pipe back from the old install, the pipe wiggled a lot and was not secured. Needed to clean up after them (cigarette butts in the driveway) and am still finding sheet metal screws on the basement floor and driveway. In addition, I had to read the manual and found out that the blower has adjustable speeds and why the installer did not know this information to decrease the speed and noise when it clearly was too loud, I am not sure. I was afraid to use the furnace until I was able to reach the installer. The installer indicated that he needed to talk to his guy and returned to my home the following weekend and was able to remove the old copper tubing, moved the exhaust flue about 1" from the gas pipe, and adjusted the furnace and air conditioner by one notch. I showed him the different adjustments that were available in the manual and indicated that he may need the jumper kit to allow for the air conditioner to run at the same speed as the furnace. It is disheartening the challenges of getting a contractor to perform at a quality level to ensure all facets of the installation is correct and to the customers satisfaction.
